Hey, you want to go?

I don't know how it worked in Southern California middle schools, but when I was in middle school, that's how a boy asked a girl to be his girlfriend. My friend and I were reminiscing of simpler days, and also laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. In those days, if a boy's friends knew he liked a girl, and wanted to ask her to "go" (not go out with me, just go), his friends would tell her friends, and next thing you knew there was a huge crowd gathered around them after school waiting to witness this new relationship to be born.

These were days filled with he said/she said, but at least the friends were there to move things along. Of course, these were also the days the boy would dump the girl if he heard through the grapevine that the girl was planning to dump him, so that he could be the dumper and not the dumpee. (did you follow?)

Another SF relationship lingo... trippin. Meaning, the stage before you guys officially became boyfriend/girlfriend. "Are you guys dating?" "No, we're just trippin'." I don't know how that word came to be, seeing that in all other areas, the only way people use that phrase is when you do or say something dumb that calls for a "You trippin, girl!"

Kids are funny. We thought it was such a big deal then, and that we were acting so mature... Who knew it would get even more complicated.

(For those of you who like to read into things, no I'm not going through relationship drama. I was just reminiscing with a friend this past weekend and thought it was funny. Don't bombard me with "So who is it?" questions. Thank you)
